The Town of Abington Highway Department is currently staffed with the following positions.
- 1 Superintendent
- 1 Assistant Superintendent
- 1 Part Time Administrative Assistant
- 2 Heavy Equipment Operators
- 1 CDL Licensed Operator
- 1 Head Mechanic
- 1 Laborer Mechanic
Our responsibilities include the care, custody and maintenance of more than 225 roadways including sidewalks and right of ways, bridges, ditches and brook clearing, drainage systems, tree maintenance, parking lots and walkways to all Municipal and School properties, line striping and road and parking lot marks and signage, traffic and street light repair and maintenance and the list goes on and on.
Vehicle Maintenance is a priority service under the umbrella of the Highway Department. All Town Departments benefit from the services in the Vehicle Maintenance division of the Highway Department, from the heavy equipment of the Highway Department and Fire Department to the special equipment of the Police Department down to the smaller lawn mowers, pumps and saws utilized by labor. The Town also provides diesel fuel, gas and oil to all of the various Town Departments at the depot located on the Highway Compound and the administration of the repairs, fuels and purchases are handled through the Highway Department.
The Highway Department handles extremely heavy work load year round, weather events such as snow and ice or hurricanes or rain storms are a common challenge. During the summer months the Department performs heavy duty construction tasks such as road building or drainage system repairs along with all of the regular assignments such as street sweeping and general spring clean up.
I encourage any site visitors to read the annual reports provided herein to get a real look at the services provided by your Abington Highway Department.
Respectfully,
Kenan J. Connell
