Important Update from Abington School Building Committee

Abington School Project Goes Out to Bid!
-A A +A

Important Update from the

Abington School Building Committee

September 1, 2015

Upon receiving the overwhelming votes of support from

Town Meeting voters in September 2014 and from the residents

who voted at the Special Ballot Election in October 2014,

the Abington School Building Committee (ASBC) has continually been meeting with

the town's project manager, professional architects, professional engineers,

professional cost estimators, and school staff and administration

over the past many months to finalize the construction plans and contract specifications

for the new Abington Middle-High School with a Pre-Kindergarten area.

The Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA), which is paying up

to $50.2 million of the project's $96.4 million total estimated cost, has also

been reviewing the details of our construction plans and our project cost estimates.

We are pleased to report that the MSBA has approved our work to date,

and the Town of Abington is still on schedule to go out to bid and award a construction

contract to a qualified general contractor within the next three months.

Specifically, the ASBC has announced that it has established the following bid schedule:

Sept 1, 2015

Bid documents and plans will be published and made available

to pre-qualified contractors.  Pursuant to the state's public bidding laws,

the ASBC has already pre-qualified over 80 subcontractors

in 15 different categories (e.g., HVAC, electrical, tile, painting, fire protection, etc),

and three general contractors have been pre-qualified for

Abington's school construction project.

Sept 15, 2015

A Pre-Bid Conference will be hosted at Abington High by our Project Manager

(Mary Mahoney of KBA) and our architects from Ai3 Architects, in order to

answer any questions or clarify any details before the subcontractors

submit their final bid packages.

Sept 29, 2015

All filed sub-bids from prequalified subcontractors are due and will be opened

at the School Administration's Offices at the (former) North School at 2pm.

The three qualified general contractors

(Agostini Bacon Construction, Brait Builders Corporation, and Fontaine Brothers Inc.)

will thereafter incorporate the results of the final sub-bids to complete

their final General Contractor Bid.

Oct 15, 2015

General Contractor Bids are due and will be opened

at the School Administration's Offices at the (former) North School at 2pm.

Oct 20, 2015

The Abington School Building Committee will hold another public meeting

at 6pm in the Police Station's Community Room

to review and announce the results of the entire bid process.

This meeting is open to the public!

If all goes well and final bids are submitted within our budget, the ASBC anticipates

that the contract will be awarded to the lowest responsible and eligible general contractor,

documents will be executed and the winning General Contractor will be

directed to proceed in early December.

It is assumed that one of the first visible signs of construction

will be the erection of a construction safety fence behind the

existing Abington High building, and thereafter the fields and areas

behind AHS will be off-limits to all but contractors and authorized personnel.

The official date of groundbreaking for the new school has not yet been determined.

Please make sure to check www.ASBC.us and to register for emailed updates

timely and accurate information about this exciting school construction project.
