How do I get a marriage license (file a marriage intention)?

The fee for a marriage intention is $40.00 in Abington.  Different towns do charge different fees.  The office does marriage intentions from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Monday thru Thursday and Friday until 12:00.  The paperwork does take a few minutes.  Couples must appear together and be eighteen or over.  The intention is good for sixty days, and there is a three day waiting period.  The three day period may be waived by district court (a fee is involved).  So if one applies on a Monday or a Tuesday, they may pick up their certificate on Friday, persons applying Wednesday-Friday may pick up their certificates on the following Monday.  Identification is not required because you swear an oath, under the pains and penalties of perjury, that you are telling the truth.

It is important to remember where you file your intentions, as it is the only place other than Boston’s Vital Records, that you will be able to get copies of the marriage certificate in the future.

Please do not hesitate to call Town Clerk’s Office at 781-982-2112 with any questions.
