In partnership with Rockland, Abington has been awarded two state grants totaling $350,000 through the Healey-Driscoll Administration’s Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) program to support a major stormwater and flood resilience project.
The project, “Nature-Based Stormwater Resilience: Abington & Rockland Watershed Assessment,” will begin in FY26 with $82,194, followed by $267,806 in FY27.
Together, the two towns will develop a detailed stormwater model to better understand flood risks today and in the future (looking ahead to 2050 and 2070). The project will identify areas most at risk and explore both nature-based and engineered solutions to reduce flooding, protect infrastructure, and support vulnerable populations.
Key parts of the project include:
Collecting local data and flood information
Modeling current and future flood scenarios
Identifying solutions like wetlands, rain gardens, or improved drainage systems
Engaging the public through multilingual outreach and school programs
Creating a public, interactive map showing flood risks and solutions
Laying out a long-term climate adaptation plan for both towns
This project builds on Abington’s past climate planning work and addresses urgent needs caused by more frequent and intense storms. It is one of 54 projects funded in the latest round of MVP Action Grants.
