Abington veterans day celebrations

This November, the Town of Abington will proudly honor local veterans through two community celebrations recognizing their service and sacrifice.

Quad-Town Veterans Day Celebration – Sunday, November 9

Veterans Day celebrationThe first event will take place on Sunday, November 9, from 12:00 to 3:00 PM at the Whitman VFW, 95 Essex Street. Hosted by the Town of Whitman in collaboration with Abington, Rockland, and Hanson, this Quad-Town Veterans Day Celebration invites veterans, families, and community members to gather for an afternoon of appreciation and fun.

The event will feature a meet and greet with Veterans Agents from each participating town, who will be available to answer questions about benefits and services. Guests can enjoy a lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs. The family-friendly event will include bouncy houses, outdoor games, music, and more.

This year’s Quad-Town Celebration replaces the long-standing Tri-Town Veterans Day Parade. Local veterans organizations collectively agreed to shift from a parade to a single celebration to make participation easier and more inclusive.

“Our Veteran Organizations agreed to shift from a parade to a family-friendly celebration this year so more veterans can participate comfortably,” Adam Gunn, Abington's Veterans' Agent explained. “Many of our veterans are older or have mobility limitations, and a single celebration improves access and attendance. Additionally, the turnout for our parade has declined in recent years, so we chose a celebration format that better serves our veterans and their families. The goal remains the same... to honor our veterans and bring the community together.”

Abington Veterans Celebration – Wednesday, November 12

Abington’s second event, the annual Abington Veterans Celebration, will take place on Wednesday, November 12, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Abington Senior Center at 441 Summer Street.

All Abington veterans, whether residents or affiliated with the community through an organization, committee, or local group, are encouraged to attend. The program will include a coffee hour, welcome ceremony, student readings, 45-table resource fair, music, entertainment, prizes, and a plated lunch with dessert.

Due to the growing size of this event, spouses are asked to attend only if the veteran requires assistance. Veterans are also encouraged to wear service apparel or uniforms as a proud symbol of their service.

Both events reflect Abington’s strong and enduring commitment to honoring those who have served and ensuring that every veteran feels valued and supported.
