Overview
The Abington Public Library keeps our community connected through stories, learning, and shared experiences. From early literacy programs that spark a love of reading to technology support that helps residents stay informed, the library is a welcoming hub for people of all ages.
More than a place for books, the library provides access to information, digital tools, and cultural programs that enrich daily life. It is where toddlers enjoy storytime, students find quiet space to study, adults explore new ideas, and seniors receive one-on-one help using technology. The library also offers free Wi-Fi, Chromebooks, museum passes, and a comfortable space for the entire community to gather.
By offering programs, resources, and support for lifelong learning, the Abington Public Library plays a vital role in keeping our town informed, connected, and engaged.
Services and Impact
Young Children: On a daily basis, APL serves as the door to learning and literacy for toddlers and preschoolers with story time programs and an extensive collection of books.
School-Aged Children and Teens: APL supports elementary and middle school students through after-school and summer enrichment programs, book discussions, and class visits that bring library services directly into the community. Study rooms are frequently used by tutors and students for academic support. Teens benefit from dedicated study spaces, access to research databases, and opportunities to shape library offerings through the active Teen Advisory Board.
Parents: By supporting children's needs, as well as their own with parenting materials, parents and families are enthusiastically welcomed at the library. APL offers a space to read, play, and encourages growth and connection.
Adults: Through providing resources for lifelong learning and leisure reading, APL supports both brain health and mental health by providing opportunities for knowledge and connection.. Programs for adults include book discussion groups, cookbook club, craft programs, speakers, author visits and other activities.
Seniors: One-on-one assistance and technology classes help seniors and other adults navigate the digital world. From using eBooks and mobile devices to accessing government websites, APL staff is here to help. These personalized services make technology more approachable and accessible.
Resources: The library provides free Wi-Fi, Chromebooks, and mobile hotspots for borrowing, as well as a welcoming place for residents seeking warmth, cooling, or community referrals such as Food Pantry information.
Museum and Attraction Passes: APL cardholders can enjoy discounted passes to local museums, zoos, and cultural attractions including the New England Aquarium. Be sure to book ahead!
Did You Know?
Library programming does not use funds from the Town’s operating budget. It is funded entirely through State Aid to Public Libraries, gift accounts, and the Friends of the Library. This includes all performers, program supplies, and even crayons for children’s activities. State Aid and gift funds also support the purchase of technology used by both staff and patrons.
Goals and Projects
Community Outreach: Expanding programs beyond the library walls, including visits to schools, Eager Beaver Day Camp, and community events such as the annual Veterans’ Fair.
Maintaining Services: Sustaining APL’s full schedule of services and programming and ensuring it remains an important part of Abington’s community fabric.
Professional Development: Increasing training opportunities for staff to continue improving service delivery.
HVAC: Working with the town to secure funding for replacing the building's aging air conditioning system is a major priority. As of summer 2025, the HVAC system is 28 years old and is well past its expected usable life.
Volunteer Information
Friends of the Library: The Friends of the Library are always looking for new members. The Friends provide funding for library programs for children and adults as well as passes to museums and attractions.
Board of Trustees: The Board of Library Trustees is a nine-member elected Board that meet in the Wales Room at the Library. Their schedule can be found on our monthly calendar.
Teen Volunteers: Teens are encouraged to join the Teen Advisory Board and help plan services for their peers.
Adult Volunteer: There is space for one adult volunteer under the Senior Citizen Tax Write-Off program.
