The Abington Police Department completed a rigorous, year-long self-assessment process representing a monumental undertaking. This effort involved the comprehensive review, validation, and implementation of policies, procedures, training, and operational practices to ensure compliance with the highest accreditation standards, while simultaneously developing and deploying a new policy management and maintenance software system.
This extensive process was followed by an on-site mock and full assessment conducted by independent assessors appointed by the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission (MPAC). During the assessment, the evaluation team thoroughly reviewed departmental policies, training records, operational practices, and documented evidence of compliance, while also engaging directly with members of the department and community stakeholders.
Achieving accredited status demonstrates that the Abington Police Department meets or exceeds the highest standards in law enforcement across a wide range of areas, including:
· Use of force policies and reporting
· Training and professional development
· Evidence handling and property management
· Emergency response planning
· Internal affairs and accountability processes
· Community engagement and transparency
Reflecting on the significance of this achievement, Chief Bonney stated:
"We needed to regain a sense of confidence and competence within our building and establish credibility as an agency that is respected by law enforcement circles and our community. This award is a symbol of unstoppable growth for us as we forge a path toward becoming an agency that people once fled from, to an agency that people want to come to. While I have only been a member of this incredible team for 18 months, I have been able to quickly realize that Abington is home. Our team is committed to long term excellence, and it is our plan to never lose sight of that, because together we are stronger."

The department’s Accreditation Team consisting of Accreditation Manager Sgt. Brian Feely, Lt. Justin Simmons, and Deputy Chief Jeffrey Postell, worked diligently to ensure compliance with each standard. Accreditation is not a one-time accomplishment; departments must maintain compliance and undergo re-accreditation every three years to retain their status.
The Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission was established to promote professionalism and public confidence in law enforcement agencies across the Commonwealth. Participation in the program demonstrates a department’s proactive commitment to excellence in policing.
The Abington Police Department thanks the community for its continued support and remains dedicated to serving with integrity, respect, and professionalism.
