Abington’s municipal aggregation program will implement a rate increase starting March 2026 through the remainder of term ending in November 2027.
The increase will be $0.01272 per kWh, increasing the current rate of $0.14099 to $0.15371.
Abington municipal aggregation program rate is still less than National Grid’s Basic Service current rates – Residential $0.15372 per kWh and Commercial at $0.14493 per kWh –which are fixed through July 31, 2026.
WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF THE RATE ADJUSTMENT?
Given average usage of 600 kWh per month, the Town’s new aggregation rates represent an increase of $7.63 per month versus the current rates.
All electricity suppliers operating in Massachusetts, including National Grid, are subject to the new market structure and the associated increase in cost (i.e. all ratepayers will be impacted). Winter Basic Service rates (effective August 1, 2026 through January 31, 2027) are expected to be elevated as a result of the implementation of the new ISO-NE Day-Ahead Ancillary Services Initiative (DASI)
WHAT IS A MUNICIPAL AGGREGATION PROGRAM?
According to Massachusetts law (M.G.L. c. 164, § 134), municipal aggregation enables local government to combine the purchasing power of its residents and businesses so that it can provide them with an alternative electricity supply.
This Program only affects the supply portion of your monthly bill. It does not affect the delivery portion. National Grid will continue to deliver your electricity but Abington, using a competitive bid process, has chosen the supplier for the Program.
DOES THIS ACTUALLY SAVE RESIDENTS MONEY?
The Town relaunched its electricity program in January 2023. From inception through September 2025, the program has saved residents and small businesses over $1.4 million in electricity costs as compared to National Grid Basic Service.
CAN I OPT-OUT OF THE PROGRAM?
Residents can opt-out at any time with NO CHARGE. It may take a couple of billing cycles before you are back on National Grid’s Basic Service. You may submit an online opt-out form OR call First Point Power at 888-875-1711 and ask to be placed on National Grid Basic Service.
