In Massachusetts, Fire Fighters Memorial Sunday (often called Fireman's Sunday) is an annual event held on the second Sunday of each June to honor firefighters who have passed away. Abington Fire Department. celebrate on June 14th with a service outside in the Council on Aging's parking lot to recognize their fallen brothers and sisters. The flag was lowered and the bell was rung 5-5-5. In the fire service, "5-5-5" (or more traditionally, 5-5-5) refers to the mournful bell sequence sounded to honor a firefighter who has died in the line of duty.
At this event, following breakfast Kevin Donovan was appointed an Honorary Fire Commissioner for all of his work on promoting the new fire house, years of service as a call firefighter, author of a book on the Abington Fire Department and unofficial historian.
