The Mass DEP has issued a Water Supply Emergency Declaration for the Abington & Rockland Joint Water Works water system.

Reservoirs are critically low.

Mandatory water use restrictions are in place.  Please help to conserve water by shutting off irrigation systems and abiding by the Level 4 Water Use Restriction.

Re: Water Supply Emergency Declaration

Dear Members of the Abington Select Board,

I am writing to formally notify you that the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Agency

(MassDEP) has issued a Water Supply Emergency Declaration for the Town's public water supply.

This declaration was requested by the Abington & Rockland Joint Water Works due to the continuing decline in our available water supply resulting from the prolonged lack of precipitation we have experienced over the past two years. Despite ongoing efforts to manage system demands and encourage voluntary conservation, our water resources have reached a level where additional measures are necessary to ensure the continued availability of safe and reliable drinking water for our residents, businesses, and critical public services.

As part of this declaration, the Abington & Rockland Joint Water Works will be enforcing mandatory outdoor water use restrictions and other conservation measures intended to reduce non-essential water consumption. A Public Notice will be issued tomorrow informing customers of the emergency declaration, the restrictions that are still in effect, and the importance of conserving water until conditions improve.

The Abington & Rockland Joint Water Works will continue to closely monitor water supply conditions, system demand, and water quality while working with the MassDEP throughout the duration of this declaration. We will keep the Select Board informed of any significant developments, operational changes, or recommendations as conditions evolve.

We appreciate the Select Board's continued support as we work to protect the Town's water supply. Public cooperation will be essential to the success of these conservation efforts, and we ask that the Board assist in reinforcing the importance of water conservation throughout the community.
