Abington Police Awarded Silver Award for Traffic Safety from AAA Northeast, and Officer Robert  Gervasi named Traffic Safety Hero

The Abington Police Department is proud to announce that it has been awarded the AAA Silver Award for Community Traffic Safety, recognizing the department’s continued commitment to roadway safety, proactive enforcement, and community education.

The AAA Traffic Safety Awards Program evaluates police departments based on their performance across several core safety categories. The Abington Police Department received high marks in the following areas:

  • Safer People: Community outreach and education, including safety information shared through social media platforms.

  • Safer Vehicles: Certification and implementation of child passenger car seat inspections and commercial vehicle enforcement initiatives.

  • Safer Speeds: Use of speed and crash data analysis to identify high-risk locations and guide enforcement priorities.

  • Safer Roads: Coordination with municipal partners to repaint crosswalks, deploy speed awareness signage, and enhance roadway safety visibility.

  • Post-Crash Care: Participation in traffic incident management training and coordinated emergency response efforts.

  • Inclusive Programs: Implementation of innovative tools such as Rumbler Siren technology, which improves warning effectiveness for individuals with hearing impairment or sensory limitations.

This recognition reflects the department’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety and reduce roadway injury and collision risks throughout the community.

Officer Robert Gervasi Named AAA Traffic Safety Hero

The Abington Police Department is also pleased to recognize Officer Robert Gervasi as an AAA Traffic Safety Hero for his dedication, professionalism, and outstanding contributions to public safety throughout 2024.

Over the past year, Officer Gervasi has played a key role in addressing impaired driving and ensuring safer roadways. He has responded to multiple incidents involving intoxicated operators, including high-risk situations that required quick judgment, adherence to procedure, and the coordination of emergency services. His work has directly prevented potential harm to motorists, passengers, and the general public.

In addition to enforcement, Officer Gervasi serves the community as a certified child passenger safety seat technician, regularly assisting families with proper installation and providing vital education on child vehicle safety.

Officer Gervasi’s 2024 enforcement record includes:

  • 101 verbal or written warnings

  • 19 civil motor vehicle violations

  • 44 criminal citations

  • 9 physical arrests

These numbers reflect not only enforcement but also a community-first approach that emphasizes education, fairness, and public trust.
