🚧Road Work Alert 🗓️ August 14, 2024 🛣️ Washington Street between Lantern Lane and Beaver Brook Elementary School Beginning Wednesday, August 14, portions of Washington Street, starting at Lantern Lane and ending at the secondary entrance of Beaver Brook Elementary School, will undergo construction. The grinding of the road will begin on August 14. In the subsequent weeks, the road will undergo construction and be paved. It is intended for all work to be completed prior to the start of school on August 28. Thank you for your patience and please drive with caution.

DPW's Sewer Division is responsible for essential tasks like monitoring pump stations, clearing blockages, and conducting routine maintenance. These efforts prevent backups and ensure our wastewater is managed properly. Their work helps safeguard our environment and public health. 2024 major projects include: Lining utility holes with inserts to reduce infiltration through utility hole covers, inspecting utility holes throughout town, and continuing daily inspections for extraneous flows that enter the sewer system. Upgrading our Walnut Street pump station. The station’s pumps, motors, generator, and transfer switch are all being replaced as part of the project.

The Abington sewer infrastructure consists of 90 miles of mains, 1,700 manholes, two flow-metering chambers, and 13 pump stations that are maintained at a high level. The Abington Department of Public Works (DPW), with the Board of Sewer Commissioners, oversees and maintains the Abington sewer system. Together, they work to keep the Town’s sewer rates below the state average.

You can help too! 🐾Make sure your pet waste is picked up and thrown away or flushed. 🍂Keep brooks, sidewalks, and storm drains clear of leaves and yard debris. 🌷Be aware of the type of fertilizer you are using for lawns and gardens. 🚗 Collect the fluids and waste when working on your car. 🌧️Collect your rainwater to be used for your gardens and lawn later.

📌Project Update: DPW/Fire Station In October 2023, residents approved funding the construction of a Fire Station and DPW facility, co-located at 225 Central Street. The DPW/Fire Station Building Committee is diligently working on the project and is selecting final design elements. The project is expected to be put out to bid this fall. The Committee anticipates the project will break ground in the spring of 2025. On July 29, Governor Healey signed the FY2025 budget which included several areas of funding for Abington. Thanks to the diligence of State Senator John F. Keenan and State Representative Alyson Sullivan-Almeida, the budget included the following funding: °$23,000 to the Abington Council on Aging for programming and services °$30,000 to the Abington Police Department for the purchase of a utility vehicle °$20,000 to the Abington Police Department for the purchase of a police drone °$25,000 to Abington for the planning, designing and permitting of youth outdoor recreational areas. Island Grove's treatment for invasive aquatic species continues to be successful! Water and Wetland, the lake and pond management company responsible for the Grove's treatment, reported no submerged invasive species at their July visit. Native species like waterlilies and loosestrife are thriving.

Green Street Park Survey Open! Green Street Park was allocated $60,000 by the Community Preservation Committee to purchase a new playground structure. The Park and Recreation Commission wants to understand the needs of the neighborhood and the greater community through a digital survey to help select the best structure. It's a great weekend for a story walk at Griffin's Dairy! Thank you to the Abington Public Library for creating this great family-friendly adventure. People can experience a beautiful nature walk at the town-owned Griffin's Dairy while stopping along the way to read 'Seeds of Change' on enlarged signs.
